Each year the Council invites County Commission Chairs, Mayors, ARC Board Members and other VIPs from across the region for this annual Meet & Greet. Join us to meet business leaders and elected officials from across the region in a relaxed, friendly environment. Last year this event was a sellout with more than 40 elected officials and VIPs as well as 200+ guests.

The Georgia Department of Transportation Issues Final RFP for I-75 and I-575 Toll Lanes

The Georgia Department of Transportation issued the final Request for Proposals (RFP) for the Interstate 75 and Interstate 575 Public-Private Partnership (P3) toll lane project on September 19th. This project will include the addition of 18 miles of new lanes along I-75 from Akers Mill Road to just north of Hickory Grove Road as well as 11 miles of new lanes along I-575 and I-75 to Sixes Road. These toll lanes are expected to relieve congestion for the 300,000 daily commuters on the Northwest Corridor of I-75. Construction on this project will begin in Spring 2013 with a targeted completion date of Fall 2016.

The deadline to submit responses to the RFP is set for February 3, 2012. Currently, there are three teams that have qualified to submit responses to the RFP. You can read the full press release here.

Appeals Court Will Not Rehear Tri-State Water Case

The 11th Circuit Court of Appeals unanimously refused a request from Alabama and Florida for a new hearing on the use of Lake Lanier as a water source for metro Atlanta. In June, a three-judge panel unanimously overturned the 2009 order from U.S. District Judge Paul Magnuson that set a three year deadline for Georgia, Alabama and Florida to reach an agreement on how water in Lake Lanier should be allocated among the three states. The consequences of not reaching a compromise would mean Georgia could only withdraw the same amount of water as it did in the mid-1970s when the population was only a third of the size it is now which could be devastating to economic development in the state. The three-judge panel issued a new one year deadline to the Army Corps of Engineers to determine how water should be allocated among the three states.

Governor Deal spokesman Brian Robinson stated, “Today’s ruling gives the state of Georgia finality on this issue and allows us to move forward in our negotiations with the governors of Alabama and Florida.” You can learn read the full decision and learn more at the links below.
